With gas prices on the rise and many Missouri families struggling to fill up their gas tanks, U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill sent a letter to Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood expressing her opposition to the idea of a vehicle miles traveled (VMT) tax, which would tax drivers based on miles driven in order to pay for highway and road projects. McCaskill believes that such a tax would penalize drivers in rural and suburban areas who often must travel long distances to work and school and do not have access to public transportation. The White House has said that they also oppose the tax. In the letter, McCaskill encouraged the administration to consider alternative proposals to pay for vital infrastructure improvements to our nation’s road and highway systems.
