The historically tight budget for the Miller County Sheriff’s Department and Jail gets a much-needed financial boost. Sheriff Bill Abbott says the county has entered into a deal to house inmates for the Springfield Municipal Police Department and the GreenCounty Jail. Abbott explains that the inmates being housed in the deal are generally college-aged and non-violent offenders…
GreeneCounty does all of the transporting back and forth of their inmates. Springfield Municipal, on the other hand, delivers their inmates with Miller County returning those inmates to Springfield, if necessary, after bonding or their court cases are over. The costs of sharing in the transportation, according to Abbott, is more than made up by $38 per day charged to each inmate being housed in Miller County. So far, over the past month or two, that has resulted in about $70-thousand being paid to Miller County with the funds to go towards operational costs of the sheriff’s department and jail.
