The Miller County Sheriff’s office is warning residents to be aware of another phone scam. They’ve received several complaints about calls claiming to be from their office and trying to solicit money for warrants. Sheriff Louie Gregoire says the caller has identified themselves as “Deputy Ellis” and is using a spoof number that shows up as being from Salem. The number is 573-453-5833 and, if you call it back, actually has a pre-recorded message set up claiming it’s the sheriff’s office, complete with actual extensions for special units. There are a couple big problems with the calls, though. First, there is no “Deputy Ellis” employed in Miller County. Secondly, if you have a warrant, you won’t get a phone call about it. If you receive one of these calls, contact the sheriff’s office or register a complaint with the Attorney General’s consumer protection division.
