The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports five people died on the state’s roads during the New Year’s holiday counting period — from 6 p.m. Friday to 11:59 p.m. Sunday. Another 75 people were injured in accidents. Troopers investigated a total of 163 traffic crashes and made 114 arrests for driving while intoxicated.
Highway fatalities hit a 62-year low last year in Missouri. For the first time since 1949, fewer than 800 Missourians lost their lives on the state’s roads and highways in 2011.
