Missouri’s #16 on the list of the 20 states with the most toxic air pollution from coal- and oil-fired power plants, according to an analysis completed for the Natural Resources Defense Council by M.J. Bradley and Associates. The study used publicly-available data in the Environmental Protection Agency’s Toxics Release Inventory (TRI). Among the key findings: Nearly half of all the toxic air pollution reported from industrial sources in the U.S. comes from coal- and oil-fired power plants. Despite the health benefits of reducing toxic pollution from power plants, some polluters and members of Congress are seeking to block EPA’s efforts to update public health protections.
