Missouri has two new laws that will help women protect their bodies.
Governor Jay Nixon signed House bill 1898 and 2081 last week. 1898 creates the Missouri Women’s Heart Health Program. The program will take federal funding and provide heart screenings to underinsured and uninsured woman. The same providers involved in the Show Me Healthy Women Program will provide the screenings. And House bill 2081 says a woman is allowed to protect her unborn child by use of deadly force. The new law says the woman has to reasonably believe that such force is necessary to save her child from death, serious injury, or any forcible felony. The new law is based on the Americans United for Life Model Legislation: the Pregnant Woman’s Protection Act. Missouri is the second state to adopt the new law, following Oklahoma. Proponents say the new law extends both legal recognition and legal protection to an unborn child. It also further isolates abortion as the only instance in which such legal recognition and legal protection are not afforded to an unborn child.
