A 40-year-old from Mexico, Missouri, is scheduled to be arraigned next week on first-degree murder and armed criminal action charges in Miller County. John Joe Powell is accused of getting into an altercation with another man at the campground below Bagnell Dam back in September. During the alleged incident, among other things, Powell dragged the victim behind a vehicle around the campground. Powell had originally been charged with three felony counts each of first-degree assault and armed criminal action until the victim died from the injuries resulting in the charges against Powell being amended to include murder. A motion filed by Powell is seeking a speedy trial on the murder and armed criminal action charges. He is currently being held in D-O-C on unrelated probation violations. A writ was filed for his appearance for the arraignment in Miller County which is set for April 4th.
