A collective bargaining project approved by the Sunrise Beach Fire Protection District board this past week is the first new operating agreement for them since 2013. Chief Joe LaPlant says the deal provides disability insurance for the firefighters for the first time, along with a 4% pay raise. The board also approved a new budget that will allow the department to hire five new firefighters in the coming year. The chief says that will allow them provide more staff at station #3 on Spruce Lane in Shawnee Bend. That station had been staffed with two crew members in 2016. It was only staffed on average 75% of the time after that. With the new hires, the station house will be staffed and remain open 100% of the time.
