Some lake area business owners learned more this past week about how a new Department of Labor rule may impact their business. It’s important information for workers, too. The new guidelines on overtime are expected to impact a large portion of the workforce.
That’s consultant Sue Kmet who addressed members of area chambers of commerce as their monthly Eggs & Issues breakfast this past Friday. She says under the new rule, even many salaried employees will now have to be paid overtime. Currently, salaried employees are exempt from overtime if they make $455 a week, or just over $23,600 a year. That goes up with the start of the new year.
The work you do and the responsibilities you have also impact whether you have to be paid overtime. Employers and workers both are encouraged to discuss the changes and be prepared for January 1st.
