Yesterday afternoon (Monday) Governor Jay Nixon passed and vetoed a few bills. One of the bills that Nixon vetoed was senate bill 841 which pertains to the sale of e-cigarettes. The bill was set to exempt these new products from the existing laws and taxes placed on traditional tobaccos cigarettes. the governor says he vetoed this bill because the FDA is still investigating whether or not these items are as harmful to the public as regular cigarettes. On the flip side of that coin the governor did pass house bill 2238, which will now allow the use of hemp or marijuana extract to treat individuals with epilepsy and also allow the Department of Agriculture to issue licenses to local farmers for the growing of hemp, but strictly for research purposes with an emergency clause that is included in the bill.
