With an update on progress, KRMS Reporter Ashley Teague.
‘The Missouri State Water Patrol will become a division of the Missouri State Highway Patrol January 1st. Water Patrol Captain Matt Walz says highway patrol staff are already handling some paperwork.’
“The highway patrol is already taking over some of the administrative duties for the water patrol beginning August 1st working toward the January conclusion as far as us joining the highway patrol,” says Walz.
‘The water patrol has already cut the majority of their civilian staff. All sworn officers have kept their positions. Captain Walz says Highway Patrol Superintendent Ron Replogle spent a day two weekends ago on the water.’
“Actually Colonel Replogle came down last Saturday and rode for about five hours in the heat of the day with our officers because he wants to know better what we do and some of the challenges we face so that’s certainly good for morale to see the boss come down and ride with us and we’re glad to see him and he asked a lot of good questions and listened intently to the answers.”
‘Walz says the Highway Patrol Superintendent got a better sense of another change that will have to be addressed. Namely, the end of the beige uniforms and the adoption of highway patrol blue.’
“Navy pants and they’re looking at different colored shirts to try to help us deal better with the heat. We’re trying several different uniforms and if people see officers out there in different colored uniforms that’s probably what they’re doing. They’re trying out different uniforms.”
