The Missouri Attorney General’s office is warning Lake area residents about a telephone consumer scam. The office has received recent reports from across the state of scam telephone calls appearing from a 202 area code. According to reports, scammers leave threatening voice mail messages urging the consumer to call back or face severe consequences. Attorney General Kris Koster says the scammers claim to be from federal agencies such as the I.R.S., attempting to collect an unpaid debt and asking for personal financial information. The calls appear to originate from the Washington D.C. area but according to Koster the use of spoofing technology means the calls are probably from overseas.
