Plans for a proposed K-9 unit for the Laurie Police Department remains up in the air. The city’s Board of Alderman tabled the proposal this week due to financial problems. However, multiple business owners and police departments have shown overwhelming support for the unit and many have expressed interest in donating to it. Police Chief Mark Black believes with the manpower shortage the department has right now, a K-9 would be a good tool for officers and an asset not only to the department but also for the city. K-9 units have proven to be very effective in combating illegal drug activity, tracking and apprehending criminals, search and rescue efforts and detecting arson.
