It took a jury only about 90 minutes to come back with a guilty verdict against Martin Priest. The, now, 60-year-old had been charged with capital murder after being accused of raping and strangling Eldon High School sophomore Tammy Rothganger back on May 16, 1984. Priest was identified in court records as being the live-in boyfriend of Rothganger’s mother at the time of her disappearance. Key testimony during the case was provided by David Nicholas, the nephew of Priest, who said he was present at the time Priest killed Rothganger. Her body, though, has never been found after, apparently, being buried on some farmland in Miller County. The Miller County trial was heard in Laclede County on a change of venue. Priest, who was already serving a life sentence in the Kansas Department of Corrections for an unrelated murder charge, will be sentenced in Laclede County on November 6th.
