Missouri is making headlines again by topping the Humane Society’s “Horrible Hundred” list with the most puppy mills for the 6th year in a row. It’s a problem that the legislature has done little about. It’s also a problem that trickles down to other organizations responsible for the care of animals. Donna Morris with Dogwood Animal Shelter says they see the effects every day.
Morris says that in the past there’s been reluctance at the local level to prosecute animal abuse or neglect cases. That’s something the county commission, Camden County Sheriff, and county prosecutor have vowed to change. They’ve recently expressed a commitment to writing and enforcing stronger ordinances to address animal control cases along with other code violations.
