The weather may be getting nicer but, unfortunately for lake area fire districts, it also means they will start getting busier. Several natural cover fires and other incidents of open burning getting away have recently been reported. One, in particular on Friday, kept firefighters from Northwest, Mid-County and Sunrise Beach busy for a while…it covered around 300 acres. Personnel from the Northwest, Coffman Bend and Rocky Mount districts also responded to other natural cover calls. Today (Sunday) is a Red Flag Warning day making it especially risky to do any type of burning. Rain in the forecast for most of this next week starting during the afternoon hours on Monday could give firefighters in the lake area a break from the natural cover calls.
