The Missouri Department of Transportation is rejecting the latest proposal by the Route 66 Association of Missouri to take ownership of the Hazelgreen Route 66 Bridge over the Gasconade river.
The group has been going back and forth with MODOT for several years in an effort to save the historical bridge, built in the 1920s.
MODOT says it will now restart the legal process of “removing the bridge.”
The bridge has been closed for several years, after being deemed unsafe for use. A new bridge was built along side it to allow the former highway to continue through over the river.
Route 66 officials say they will continue to fight to keep it from being removed.
