The Founder of the World Championship Power Boat Racing Series in Key West has died.
According to SpeedOnTheWater.com, John Carbonell passed away of natural causes at the age of 83.
Carbonell first started the racing series in 1984 after serving in the US Army.
In the late 80s, Carbonell took over the management of the American Power Boat Association, then in the 90s he created Super Boat International.
Both organizations produced championships races for the Keys.
In 2019, SBI lost the race rights to Key West after new organization Race World Offshore won the city’s 5-year-contract to manage the future races.
