Camdenton plans to file its response to the ACLU internet filter lawsuit by Thursday. Last night the board heard from several members of the public, all of whom said the school should stand up against the suit. Superintendent Tim Hadfield says the American Civil Liberties Union is suing to grant access to lesbian and gay rights websites. The superintendent says the Children’s Internet Protection Act prohibits access.
The ACLU has asked for a permanent injunction to remove the filter. Hadfield says once the school files its response it is up to the federal judge.
Another issue at last night’s board meeting was concern about parental consent, specifically if a student requests access to a controversial website, which is currently done anonymously, should a parent be informed. Hadfield says the school will address the issue after the suit is resolved.
Last night the board added language to its policies to clarify the procedure for a student that wants access to a blocked site.
