The issue of making marijuana legal in the Lake Area, and statewide, could soon appear on a future ballot. Four different initiative petitions seeking that marijuana be legalized and other provisions included have been announced by the Secretary of State’s office. The initiatives require a minimum number of signatures to be placed on a statewide ballot and, if approved by the voters at that time, would also call for the immediate removal of marijuana as a controlled substance, anyone being held for non-violent cannabis-related crimes be immediately released and their convictions expunged. A 30-day period is now open to allow comments for, and against, the initiatives. If the initiatives are successful, the issue will be placed on the November, 2018, ballot.
