Cell phone users are accustomed to seeing a surcharge on their bills to help pay for 9-1-1 services. Until now, though, people who use prepaid cell phones have been exempt from that expense. A new surcharge on those users is now in effect. Anytime you buy a new cell card for your minutes, you’ll be charged a tax on anything over $15.
Camden County Sheriff Tony Helms says the new surcharge will help offset some of the revenue lost in a cultural shift that has seen people abandon landline phones in favor of cellular.
