It’s getting harder to protect your identity at gas pumps and ATM’s. Skimmers have been around for years, but now criminals are using new technology to make them harder to detect. Cyber security expert Scott Schober was on “The Ozarks Today” on KRMS and says the new trend in skimming relies on blue tooth connections. Crooks place their modules inside the pumps or bezels and never have to return to retrieve it.
Schober works with law enforcement, the petroleum industry, weights and measures departments, and other groups to try to locate and remove skimmers. There are devices that allow them to scan machines to find devices that don’t belong. But for the average consumer, Schober says you’re best off to pay with cash or pay inside at a station you frequent and have not had trouble with.
