There’s no arguing that some jobs are more dangerous than others with law enforcement and the fire service arguably, at least, near the top of the list. But now with recent reports that firefighters are some 17 times more likely to be diagnosed with cancer compared to other professions, how will the industry be affected in years to come? Mid-County Fire Chief Scott Frandsen says it’s already tough enough having a full complement of staff and volunteers available without having to answer questions and concerns about coming down with cancer just because you did your job..
Frandsen also says a good first step towards making sure the industry doesn’t suffer in the way of manpower is to make sure firefighters and their service are not forgotten years down the road..
It’s often a thankless job until something happens to you or your family and you need that firetruck to roll up with enough personnel to take care of your problem. The main question now is what can be done for those who come to your aid to help them survive the fire service.
