The Miller County Collector is under fire in a scathing report issued by State Auditor Nicole Galloway. The audit report says that the county collector has not filed an annual settlement since 2014. Even that report, according to Galloway, was filed late and only after a previous audit identified a similar problem. The auditor says without the annual settlements, the County Clerk cannot ensure that taxes charged and credited to the collector are accounted for properly, and the commission cannot verify the accounts. The auditor says failure to file the settlements is a violation of state law. Miller County was given a “fair” ranking in the regularly-scheduled audit, which also identified problems in several other departments that Galloway says need to be corrected.
