Significant safety changes are being made in the Morgan County r-2 school district in Versailles following an incident this week in which a child left the elementary school with a stranger. According to a statement released by Principal Joni Spalding, the school is very concerned and is working to make sure an incident like what happened on Monday does not happen again. Spalding went on to say “student safety is of utmost importance and they are constantly working to improve routines and procedures and are very sorry that the incident occurred. Apparently a family friend arrived to pick up a little girl but was given the wrong child. The adult then took the child’s hand went outside, spoke to her for a moment and then returned to the office. The confusion arose when two little girls approximately the same age, both sick and coming from the nurse’s office were being picked up at the same time. According to some reports, the woman took the little girl outside to make a point and see how far she could get before school officials noticed she had been given the wrong child.
