Tax season is underway and so are efforts by scam artists to take advantage of citizens. Officials are warning lake area residents that con artists are busy this tax season attempting to steal people’s money and identity thru emails and phone calls. Con artists call or email posing as IRS agents and then ask unsuspecting victims to send them money or click on a link. The better business bureau warns that if someone follows the e-mail’s instructions, they could be giving scammers access to personal information which could then lead to identity theft. The BBB reminds residents that the IRS only uses the U.S. mail and will never email, text or call you.
