A Missouri teenager in Egypt arrested during protests in Cairo Sunday has been released.
19-year-old Derrick Sweeney’s mother in Jefferson City says it’s “the best Thanksgiving gift.”
Joy Sweeney says she wasn’t sure just when her son, a student at Georgetown University, would be returning home. “We still have yet to talk to Derrick. We’re not 100 percent sure if he knows where his passport is, but as soon as we can figure that out we’re going to get him on a plane and get him home as quickly as possible,” she said in a telephone interview.
Sweeney interned for Congressman Blaine Luetkemeyer earlier this year. Luetkemeyer issued a statement saying he’s “extremely pleased that he’s safe and coming home, especially on Thanksgiving.”
