With just one full week remaining in the calendar year, it looks as though vehicle fatalities will close out below last year’s totals. The Highway Patrol reports that vehicle fatalities are currently down 5% from 2018. Last year there were 921. So far this year, there have been 843. If that pattern holds true, it will mark at least the third consecutive year in which vehicle-related fatalities have declined. Unfortunately, boating and drowning deaths are both on the rise. There were 16 boating deaths in 2018. There have been 18 recorded this year. Drowning deaths are way up, from 34 in 2018 to 60 so far this year.
