Firefighters in Versailles are asking for the support of voters when they go to the polls in a few weeks. The fire department has a proposed sales tax on the April 3rd ballot.
Chief Duane Miller estimates that approval of the ¼ cent sales tax would generate roughly $169,000 for the department.
Meanwhile, the department is hoping to land some grant money to help with equipment upgrades. The department has filed two applications for grants through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Miller says the grants won’t fully fund the upgrades. If approved, the department will still have to pay about $5,000 for the equipment and roughly $12,000 for the truck. They also won’t know for awhile yet whether they receive the grants. The grant awards won’t be officially announced until October.
