When the incident occurred in 2014 that led to Brandon Ellingson drowning in the lake, the Water Patrol Division took a step back and decided to change their policies and how they train their troopers. Captain Matt Walz says, while they can’t change the past, they can still learn from it.
Going into the next boating season, the Water Patrol will separate the different operations from the Troop F portion so that specific troopers will be solely responsible for patrolling the lake, instead of all of the different waterways within the troop. They will also be assigning 5 additional troopers to the lake area. Those five troopers are set to graduate from the academy today.
