Wednesday is International Walk to School Day. Dozens of schools across Missouri, including Eldon Soth Elementary and Eldon Upper Elementary in the Lake area will be participating. Organizer Brent Hugh acknowledges that due to safety concerns, fewer parents allow their kids to walk to school now than in the past. In the 1960s, about half of all students would walk or bike to school. Now, in Missouri, he says that number is 10 percent or less. One popular solution is called a “walking school bus.” Students walk specific routes to school under adult supervision while picking up additional children along the way.
