This Sunday will mark the one year anniversary since the drowning death of an Iwoa man at the Lake. On May 31st, 2014, 20 year old Brandon Ellingson drowned while in the custody of the Missouri Highway Patrol’s Water Division. Here’s a timeline of events surrounding the tragic incident. In September, a coroner’s inquest ruled Ellingson’s death accidental and special prosecutor Amanda Grellner announced she would not file criminal charges in the case again Trooper Anthony Piercy who was the arresting officer. However in January, Grellner announced she had received new information and was taking a fresh look at the case. Then in March, she recused herself from the case citing a conflict of interest and Crawford County Prosecutor William C. Seay was appointed to take her place. Ellingson’s family has also filed two federal lawsuits against the Highway Patrol following their son’s death.
