After sinking this week at its mooring near Bagnell Dam the historic Larry Don was to be raised today with airbags, pumped free of water and then searched for the source of the leak. But raising the 65-foot passenger vessel is going to be tricky due to the boat’s proximity to the docks, as well as the wind, the ice, the boat’s high center of gravity and underwater cable. Local residents were also out to protest the possibility of the Larry Don ultimately being scrapped. One protester John Ellis pointed out how historically significant the vessel is to the lake.
Mike Shepard, owner of Beaver’s at the Dam and the Larry Don, was quoted saying the final decision about the fate of the Larry Don will not be made until the condition of the vessel is known but that right now salvage is the last option.
