With the first winter storm hitting the lake area Sunday, the highway patrol is asking residents to take extra precautions when driving on area roadways. The patrol says its imperative that motorists wear seatbelts, drive with caution and also make sure the vehicle is in good working condition. Also, keep your gas tank at least half full; keep an ice scraper, tire chains, battery cables, blankets, a flashlight and a bag of sand or cat litter in your trunk for emergencies. The patrol also reminds drivers its state law to have your headlights on when using your windshield wipers. The national research council says poor weather related driving conditions are associated with 7,000 fatalities, 800,000 injuries and more than 1.5 million crashes each year.
