A cove in Truman Lake was recently closed to protect the lake from the spread of the dangerous zebra mussels. Missouri Department of Conservation agents closed the cover once they discovered what they knew where zebra mussels that had come from someone cleaning off their boat before putting it into the water. Scuba divers discovered that the mussels were fresh and had not had a chance to multiply yet and were able to treat the area and remove all mussels before they could infect the lake. Conservation agent Tim Banek explains why zebra mussels can be quite dangerous to lakes
Banek says there are only a handful of lakes that are infected including Lake of the Ozarks
Banek says the mussels came from someone with an infected boat
Banek has some recommendations on how to eliminate that from happening again
Banek says because they caught the mussels in the cove so quickly they were able to kill them before they started growing and eventually infecting the entire lake area. The cove was re-opened on Wednesday afternoon with no damage to the natural wildlife.
