The Missouri State Treasurer is warning Missourians about an unclaimed property e-mail scam. The scam comes to people’s inboxes caliming that the recipient is owed $2.8 million dollars in unclaimed property found in a metal trunk. A fake individual, Jeff Smith of the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators, is named in the e-mail, which requests the address, telephone number, age and occupation of the recipient. If a person responds they are then directed to call an attorney based in the U.K. who will then ask for more personal information. State Treasurer Clint Zweifel says no one from the national association would ever contact an individual to report unclaimed property. If you are a victim contact the Internet Complaint Center or the Federal Trade Commission.
