More details have been released following an officer-involved shooting on Thursday in Jefferson City.

The highway patrol is handling the investigation at the request of the JCPD.

Preliminary investigation indicates that officers were patrolling an area while attempting to contact 40-year-old Joey Hampton for possible drugs and weapons offenses when Hampton fled on a scooter into the area of a business backyard before opening fire on the officers.

Hampton was subsequently hit by officers returning the fire with his injuries undisclosed.

Hampton has since formally been charged with two felony counts of first-degree assault involving special victims along with one count each of discharging or shooting at-or-from a moving vehicle, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm.

The highway patrol also says the incident is still an active and ongoing investigation.
