There’s new research showing that birth rates have increased in states with total abortion bans along with a growing need for assistance for families.
In the 13 states with total abortion bans, researchers find an increase in both birth rates and the need for food assistance in 2023, the year after Roe v. Wade was overturned.
Lilly Springer at the University of Kansas says that would be about $6.9 million in additional food costs.
Springer says in states that were most likely to ban abortion, there were holes in the system and people were less likely to easily get access.
Some states have a cap on their government WIC program, which could lead to waitlists for mothers in need.
The study is published in the journal Economic Inquiry.
