With reports of “bird flu” being on the rise across Missouri, the Department of Conservation is encouraging the public to use extra caution.

Precautions suggested for hunters to minimize the chances of human infections include dressing harvested game birds in the field, dispose of carcasses and waste properly and allowing all hunting gear to dry completely between trips.

Precautions for the public to follow include not touching any dead or sick birds, report sightings of dead game birds and raptors, keep pets away from affected wildlife and wear protective gloves or masks and wash hands when done.

More information about the bird flu is available on the conservation department’s website.
