St. Louis finds itself in lofty company but not the kind of company putting the city in a favorable light after being ranked by the American Tort Reform Association as the nation’s 6th worst Judicial Hellhole.

New data released shows that every St. Louis resident pays a $1,653 annual “tort tax” with more than 30,000 jobs lost each year due to lawsuit abuse…a 12 percent increase from last year.

By comparison, the figures also show that Kansas City residents pay a “tort tax” of more than $2,000 each year while Springfield residents pay around $875 per year and residents in the Illinois portion of the St. Louis Metro area pay over $1,000.

Experts say a reform of Missouri’s civil justice system could boost the St. Louis economy by $3.5 billion and increase the state’s gross product by 7.5 billion.
