A 23-year European study published in the New England Journal of Medicine finds regular PSA tests cut the risk of men dying from prostate cancer by 13%.

But now we are finding out there’s even more to the findings.

This most detailed long-term study yet affirms earlier research suggesting regular prostate screening DOES reduce deaths — but can also lead to some men undergoing unnecessary, invasive surgery for conditions that might never have become life-threatening.

“The numbers have got a little bit better, so slightly more deaths reduced, slightly less, but fundamentally the same,” says Dr. Matthew Hobbs of Prostate Cancer UK.

He is suggesting men at high risk would benefit MOST from regular screening — with men at low risk facing the same benefit, versus harm dilemma as that faced by low-risk women considering mammograms.
