Wallethub Names Missouri As #22 Of The Most “Sinful” States In The US

With hate crimes having a record spike last year and drug overdose deaths remaining a major issue, the personal-finance website WalletHub has released its reports on the most sinful states for 2024.

Coming in with a ranking of 6th for having the most excesses and vices, Missouri is ranked number-22 overall in the report.

Among the other key metrics used to compile the list include: anger and hatred, jealousy, greed and lust.

Wyoming, New Hampshire and Idaho are identified as the least sinful states while California, Louisiana and Nevada top the report as the most sinful states in the country.

With hate crimes having a record spike last year and drug overdose deaths remaining a major issue, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2024’s Most Sinful States. To determine where the U.S. has the most moral growing to do, WalletHub compared the 50 states based on seven sinful behaviors: anger and hatred, jealousy, excesses and vices, greed, lust, vanity and laziness. Below are some highlights from the report.

Key Stats

  • Maine has the lowest violent crime rate, which is 7.6 times lower than in New Mexico, the state with the highest.
  • Idaho has the fewest thefts (per 1,000 residents), which is 3.7 times fewer than in Washington, the state with the most.
  • Colorado has the lowest share of obese adults, which is 1.7 times lower than in West Virginia, the state with the highest.
  • Utah has the lowest share of adult smokers, which is 3.3 times lower than in West Virginia, the state with the highest.
  • Alaska has the fewest beauty salons (per square root of population), which is 10.8 times fewer than in Florida, the state with the most.
