2023 was a bittersweet year on our roadways according to the department of transportation.

MoDOT’s Central District Area Engineer Danny Roeger says despite a multitude of roadway improvements being made, there are still way too many people dying in traffic accidents on statewide roadways.

“We surpassed 1,000 for the previous 2 years, 2021 and 2022, but thankfully by a slim margin….we did not reach that 1,000 mark. So, 992 were the fatalities for calendar year 2023, which is 992 too many.”

Roeger also says it’s the same story for motorcycle-related fatalities with an almost 400% increase compared to recent years which, unfortunately, coincides with the state legislature removing the helmet law from the books.
