When it comes to being energy efficient, there’s plenty of room for improvement in Missouri.
That’s according to a study by wallethub.com which places the Show-Me State as 39th overall in the study of the 48 contiguous states.
Two of the key metrics used for the study included home energy which ranked Missouri 39th and automobile energy which ranked Missouri 31st.
The least energy efficient states according to wallethub.com are Alabama, West Virginia and South Carolina while Washington, California and Vermont are the most energy efficient states.

With 26% of U.S. electricity generation expected to come from renewables in 2026, the personal-finance company WalletHub today released its report on 2025’s Most & Least Energy-Efficient States, as well as expert commentary.
To gauge the financial impact of doing more with less energy — the average American household spends at least $2,000 per year on utilities and another $3,120 on motor fuel and oil — WalletHub compared the auto- and home-energy efficiency in 48 U.S. states. Due to data limitations, Alaska and Hawaii were excluded from our analysis.
