The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, or NORML, has released a statement after the Supreme Court upheld the rights of marijuana consumers to legally possess firearms.

The ruling in the case “United States versus Hemani” determined that efforts by the federal government to categorically ban firearm ownership for individuals with a history of marijuana use violates the Second Amendment.

Justices rejected arguments that the government’s ban was rooted in historical precedence or that cannabis consumers are either “categorically or unusually dangerous.”

NORML called the Supreme Court’s decision an important vindication of personal freedom and constitutional principle.
