At 8:19pm, the Gravois Fire Protection District was toned out to a blaze at the location. When crews arrived they found the building to be fully engulfed with high winds throwing embers around.
According to Assistant Chief Don Winfrey, within the first 30 minutes the wind picked up dramatically leading to a brush fire near the building that lead to an evacuation of tenants in the Brentwood apartment complex just southeast of the fire.
Due to the amount of equipment needed to put the fire out, Highway 5 was closed for at least 2 hours while Morgan County Sheriff’s Department deputies diverted traffic to Routes 135 and J.
The Gravois Fire Protection District was also assisted by the Versailles Rural Fire Protection District, Mid-Mo Ambulance as well as the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office. The structure was a total loss.
Winfrey said the building burned so quickly due to its wood construction and the age of the building.
