How To Keep Your Pipes From Bursting In The Artic Air

With arctic air blast that happened over much of the nation including the lake area, there are a few tips you might want to remember on how to keep your pipes from freezing.

CBS Reporter Christopher Cruise says these steps will make a major difference in your home…

“If you’re leaving your home, consider turning off your water supply from the main source. If you’re staying at home, turn your faucets on allowing an amount of water around the dimeter of a pencil running from the faucet furthest from the place where the water comes into your home. And keep that water running until the temperature goes above freezing. Also, consider insulating exposed pipes….experts say even wrapping them in newspaper can help.”

Other tips include running warm water through your pipes if you begin to see a decrease in water pressure and, if that doesn’t work, try gently applying heat to your pipes with a hairdryer.

Otherwise, if just a one-half inch pipe bursts, the alternative could be 10 to 12 gallons of water pouring out…every minute.
